Alcobaça

It can be truly said that Santa Maria de Alcobaça is the cradle of Portuguese culture. In fact, it was in this Monastery that, for centuries, arts and letters developed in a surrounding of profound mysticism. It was here that economic development was promoted, by means of agricultural planning and progress. Its origins date back to 1151, when D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, invited St. Bernard and his monks from Citeaux in France to found a monastery in Portugal. The architectonic style can be classified as proto-Gothic, since the Romanic base of the first constructions was been adorned with Gothic expression.
